So I as I mentioned earlier, I found a house for the coming year. It's less than a mile from the one I live in now. I kind of wanted something closer to campus, but it became clear that finding such a place was out of my budget and highly competitive. So Craig and I will be moving to a duplex that is basically down the road.

It took the landlord a long time to decide, though, and it's been stressing me out for a while. He had some reservations about renting to two college guys, but he put them aside, I guess. So now I get to basically enjoy the rest of summer, with the exception of moving. It took me a month, but damn it, I found a place.

Also, just as a point of interest, there are photos on facebook from the ride to Monterey. If you're curious at all, you can see them at the following URLs:

Yesterday ranks amongst some of the most epic days of my life.

I, along with Scott and Craig, biked from Santa Cruz to Monterey. It was incredible. We rode south from Santa Cruz, through little sea-side towns and into the farmlands. We biked one lane roads through strawberry and artichoke fields populated by migrant workers to Highway 1. We went down the highway through Moss Landing, threatened by speeding traffic. We kept pushing, through the fog, cold, and wind. We biked through dunes and sand and, finally, we arrived in Monterey.

Scott and I's odometers bother read 50 miles when we got to the aquarium.

The weather was less than perfect, though. Leaving Santa Cruz it was sunny, mildly warm and slightly breezy. Better weather we could not have asked for. But when we got to La Selva Beach, though, things were different. There was fog blowing onto the cliffs, and we couldn't even see Capitola off in the distance. We decided that if we got to Highway 1 and the visibility was poor we would turn around because we didn't want to get hit by cars.

The wind was pretty bad on that stretch. Through one part of it we were head-on into the wind and it was cold. Scott and Craig were freezing a lot of the time (I wasn't, but it's hard to make me cold). We got to Highway 1 and there were low clouds, but otherwise visibility was good. We took a break in Moss Landing to eat a bit and rest, and to take pictures of the power plant and the old, one-horse-town buildings.

From there we got back into farmland and biked until we were in the middle of nowhere. We found the trailhead for the Monterey Bay Coast Trail, which took us the rest of the way into Monterey. We stopped in Marina to rest again. I was definitely starting to feel tired about 37 miles in. Craig's leg cramped up so we had to let him walk it off. From there we got into Seaside.

That was the best part. The skies were blue for the first time since Aptos. We got some beautiful views of the Monterey peninsula from the trail. And it was warm. It gave us a pretty good second wind. When we finally got into Monterey, we ate. I never realized during the ride just how hungry I was.

We went looking for Scott's van, which we had parked overnight in a residential area just outside of the tourist area. We got lost for a while but eventually found it.

It was pretty gruelling at the end there. We totalled about 55 miles altogether. I spent about 3:45 on the road on the way there, but the whole trip totalled around 6 hours.

This is the route we took: http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/ca/santa-cruz/949796869201

I gotta do that again someday. It was great fun, and it would have been better if the weather had been more agreeable.

So I sat down to do my finances for the next year.

It had a point. Things are all in the preliminary stages at the moment. I need to talk to advisers and instructors and my parents about basically all of this, but I have formulated a pretty good plan.

The first part of the plan is that I want to go to the University of Lund in Sweden next summer to participate in their Swedish language programme. I can go through the University of California, which facilitates things such as financial aid and payments and the like. I've wanted to do this for a while. I want to get another language under my belt, and while I don't expect that I would become anywhere near fluent in under two months (the program runs from mid-June to the end of July), it would be intensive, full-immersion, and would give me a good basis for things like reading articles and doing basic research in Scandinavian languages. Anyway, I like Sweden, I love the language, and it would be a great change of scenery.

Now as cool as that sounds, I found a way to make it better. I mentioned a while ago that The University of the Faroe Islands offers a language and culture program in August. The timing should be pretty much perfect such that as I finish in Sweden I can pack up and move on to the Faroes (they're a bunch of wind-swept ex-volcanic islands once populated by vikings in between Iceland and Scotland, if you're looking for them on a map). A chance to learn about a language with less than 75,000 speakers in the beautiful location where it is spoken sounds like something I can't pass up.

Of course I have to get into the programs, too, which simply might not happen for a variety of reasons. I'll worry about that later. The good news is that I discovered that I can afford to do it. Without considering financial aid, which I could possibly receive.

I saw a show on Discovery or the Food Channel today about Iceland. All it did was confirm that I really want to do all of this. It's one hell of a plan, but I think it's really exciting and I hope I can make it work out.

On a separate note, house hunting continues. I've gotten on the good side of a landlord with a duplex not far from here, and thought it isn't closer to campus like I hoped it might be, I hope he gives it to Craig and I. It means I would get to enjoy the rest of the month.

Also, I'm on call for Jury duty in San José all week. I have a horrible feeling I'm going to get called to the San José courthouse for Wednesday. Hope I don't.

stress..
